00100	Mr. John Leng
00200	Digital Equipment Corp.
00300	Maynard, Massachusetts
00400
00500	Dear John:
00600
00700 It was good to meet with you again and especially to
00800	hear that of D.E.C.'s plan to let us trade in our KA-10 and
00900	PDP-6 on a KL-10 when that becomes available. I would like to
01000	expres our thanks for this.
01100
01200 In connection with this plan, I have some suggestions:
01300
01400 1. I would like to have our chief system programmer,
01500	Ralph Gorin, visit D.E.C. and have him learn about the KL-10
01600	plans in connection with integrating the KL-10 into our system.
01700	I would like our KL-10 to operate as far as possible as a
01800	standard KL-10 runnning the standard KL-10 version of TENEX.
01900	This will be advantageous both to you and us. The disadvantages
02000	mutual disadvantages of our simply putting a KL-10 in our system
02100	in an ad hoc way may be imagined by remembering the consequences
02200	of the M.I.T. Artificial Intelligence Laboratory having a bob-tailed
02300	PDP-6. Some of the consequences in terms of separation of M.I.T.
02400	software development from the main stream are still with us.
02500
02600 The areas in which we will probably want to make further
02700	modifications to our system than simple replacement are in the
02800	are of the use of PDP-11's for controlling I-O and in the use of
02900	displays.
03000
03100 The area in which we consider ourselves in advance of the
03200	rest of the time-sharing community is in the use of displays. As
03300	you may remember we have had 60 displays in our lab for two years
03400	now, we have developed much experience and software for display
03500	based time-sharing systems, and we plan further major improvements.
03600	It is my hope tha we will be able to help et really good display
03700	service into the KL-10 version of TENEX and that this will be of
03800	benefit to ourselves, to D.E.C., and to the rest of the users.
03900
04000 Would it be convenient to have Ralph visit and if so, when??
